Pre-production: Process

Outline some of the main processes in the development and pre production stages:

One of the first processes of the development of a film are creating the pre visualisation drawings and the ideas are generated. A film producer who has already produced others in the past will have an easier journey into getting their new ideas produced. This is because it is less of a risk as there work has already been successful so there is a higher chance of the film making revenue. This is different compared to new and upcoming film creators and producers. Before they approach a production company they need to build a portfolio of their ideas in order for the film to get the green light to start production. Most employ an artist to create pre visualisation drawings. This allows the production company to get a more detailed understanding of how the finished product will look. This is especially common for Science fiction films as they are fantasies so the film producers need visuals to back up their ideas. The treatment given to the production company in order for them to get an understanding of what the film is about. The treatment is usual 2-3 pages long and has a detailed description about the plot of the film and what will happen.

After the financing is sought and the production company has agreed to produce the film the pre production stage begins. This is when the actors and crew are hired, studio time is booked and locations are finalised. Another key stage of the pre production is the creation of the storyboards. This gives the crew a detailed idea of how the film will look. The story boards are normally either cartoons or moving images. This process is important in the pre production as it allows the crew to see how the film should be shot and what the producer wants to achieve. In this stage the screenplay is also written. This gives a detailed description on the mood of all the scenes, how the actors should deliver their lines and who should be where at what time in a specific scene of the film. Everyone on set will have a copy to work from during the filming stage.
